Strawberry Land

Kia ora koutou.

When you look around Birkdale and Beach Haven, what do you see? Houses (including a lot of new ones), shops, schools, churches, business warehouses, petrol stations, parks, trees and hills. 

Can you see remnants of the past? 

I’ve spent a lot of time walking around this area and researching local history. With the help of this book, you will be able to recognise aspects of the past in Birkdale / Beach Haven. You can learn more about culturally significant places to visit and local landmarks you might see every day.  

Through looking at the old photos and reading the memories of past Birkdale residents, you will be able imagine what life was like here in the ‘old days’. The sea was a bountiful resource for Mãori. The land became a productive farming area for later settlers, and was known for the best strawberries in
New Zealand. 

We live in a lovely, interesting part of Auckland. Have fun exploring it!
