Play and Physical Activity

As young people move into their teenage years, play and physical activity continue to be just as important as ever. Staying active helps teenagers build strong bodies, support their mental health, and develop important life skills like teamwork, leadership, and resilience.
Movement doesn’t just boost physical health — it also lifts mood, reduces stress and anxiety, improves sleep, and supports better focus and learning. Young people who stay active are more likely to engage fully in their education, achieve higher academic success, stay in school longer, and experience greater overall wellbeing.
Being part of a team, through school or a local club, can also build a strong sense of belonging, strengthen friendships, and encourage better school attendance by helping young people feel more connected and positive about their school experience. But organised sport isn’t the only way. Physical activity can be informal and fun too — like shooting hoops at the park, going for a walk with friends, skateboarding, or joining a dance or fitness class.
Encouraging teenagers to find activities they enjoy helps build positive habits that can last a lifetime, whether in a team environment or on their own terms. Supporting teens to stay active is one of the best investments we can make in their overall wellbeing — sometimes it’s as simple as giving them opportunities, showing interest, and celebrating the small wins along the way.
