Kaipātiki Parent Pack

Mental health issues are increasingly common among teenagers and can impact their emotional, social, and academic development. Adolescence involves rapid changes that make teens more vulnerable to conditions like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and self-harm. Social media, academic pressure, global uncertainty, and the lasting effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have intensified stress and isolation. Early recognition, open conversations, and access to professional support are vital for promoting mental well-being.

Depression

Teen depression is a serious condition that affects thoughts, emotions, and behaviour, often disrupting school and relationships. Unlike occasional sadness, it is persistent and may stem from academic, social, or family pressures, as well as biological changes.

Common signs or symptoms include:

  • Ongoing sadness or hopelessness
  • Loss of interest in activities
  • Withdrawal from friends/family
  • Sleep and appetite changes
  • Fatigue or low energy
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Irritability or anger
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Thoughts of self-harm or suicide

Seek professional help if symptoms last over two weeks.

Anxiety

Anxiety in teenagers is a common but often misunderstood mental health issue. While it’s normal for teens to experience occasional worry or nervousness, anxiety becomes a problem when it is persistent, intense, and interferes with everyday activities.

  • Common signs or symptoms include:
  • Constant worry or fear
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Trouble concentrating
  • Muscle tension
  • Sleep issues
  • Racing heart or shortness of breath
  • Stomach aches or nausea
  • Avoiding stressful situations.
